Karen Yates - Instructor

Karen Yates has been teaching for TPS since
2002. She began her career in Emergency Medical
Services in 1983 as an Emergency Medical
Technician. Two years later she became a
paramedic and worked for several transfer
and emergency transport services in the Dallas/Ft.
Worth area. Karen became involved in EMS
education in 1988, quickly becoming and EMS
Instructor/Examiner, ACLS Instructor, and
BTLS Instructor.
In 1991 Karen graduated from El Centrol
College in Dallas with an Associate Degree
in Nursing. As a graduate nurse Karen transferred
from the EMS Education Department at Methodist
Medical Center in Dallas to the Surgical/Trauma
Intensive Care Unit. After working there
for several years she returned to her first
love as the EMS Manager at Methodist Medical
Center. Karen then served as the Emergency
Department Nurse Manager from April 1999
to July 2003. At that time Karen returned
to bedside nursing as a Level III staff nurse
on the Neuro/Ortho Trauma Unit at Methodist
Medical Center. This career move has allowed
her to spend more time teaching in a variety
of nursing and EMS courses.
Karen also holds a Bachelor of Science degree
in Health Service Administration from Columbus
University, where she graduated Summu Cum
Laude. In addition to EMS Coordinator/Examiner
Karen currently holds Instructor credentials
in ACLS, BTLS, AMLS, PALS, TNCC. Karen is
also a course coordinator for Geriatric Education
for Emergency Medical Services and the Brain
Injury Foundcation Traumatic Brain Injury
Course.
In addition to her nursing job Karen currently
is employed by the City of Hurst as their
EMS Education Coordinator. This role allows
her to assist fire department personnel with
their continuing education and clinical skill
needs.
In her time off Karen enjoys traveling,
reading, and going to movies.
